Swansea selects Cityspace iPlus for regeneration pilot

17 July 2006

London, 17 July 2006 Cityspace, the UK's leading provider of urban digital networks, today announces its agreement with Swansea Council to pilot an iPlus Point as part of the council's City Centre Core Retail Area regeneration scheme, unveiled last week.

Underpinning Swansea Council's drive to improve perceptions to visitors and improve the living and working environment for its residents, iPlus Points are easy to use, touch screen interactive terminals providing useful information and services on the street. The pilot iPlus will give users access to council services and tourism, health, emergency and leisure information as well as free email, BBC News and Sport, mapping and print outs.

Critically, a regional journey planner will prove extremely helpful to passengers between the recently revamped High Street rail station and the City's Quadrant bus station some distance way, which itself is due for refurbishment next year.

Commenting on the iPlus pilot, Gareth Hughes, Urban Regeneration Coordinator, Swansea Council says: Swansea City Centre is a vibrant, bustling population hub for residents, workers and visitors and in all cases this audience will find having free, helpful information on the street to be of value, we expect the pilot to succeed in helping us to deliver a dynamic place to live, work, shop and visit.

The Swansea Council has secured £3.5 million towards City Centre Core Retail Area regeneration works funded from the Welsh Assembly Government's Local Regeneration Fund and European Objective One grant.

The pilot iPlus Point is planned to be in the ground at the central town junction of Whitewalls and Oxford Street by the autumn, with a view to creating a wider network within the City Centre in 2007.

We are delighted to be a part of this exciting regeneration scheme and agree that iPlus complements the wider goals of the Swansea City Centre project, comments Tim Halford, Business Development Manager at Cityspace.

On-street, accessible information and travel planning is not only helpful for urban regeneration; it also helps to get people out of their cars and onto public transport. We look forward to reporting on a successful pilot and to developing a real information infrastructure in Swansea City Centre next year.

The iPlus Point will also feature a wireless broadband antennae providing access to the internet, free of charge, through any wireless-enabled device within a 300 metre radius.

End.
